Woodrow Thomas Wilson (1913-1921)

Personal Facts:

  1. He was born the first son and third child.
  2. He was educated partly at home and partly at private schools.
  3. In 1873, he attended Davidson college, a small Presbyterian school in North Carolina, but later on enrolled at College of New Jersey (now Princeton).
  4. He recived his law degree and in 1882 settled in Atlanta.
  1. He was not good at the bussiness aspect of the venture and in1883, he left it and went to graduate school at The John Hopkins University to study history.
  2. He married his first wife, Ellen Louise Axson in June 1885. They had three daughters and she died in 1914 during his first term in office.
  3. He had jobs teaching at various Universities and institutions.
  4. He was a good writer and published many books and aurticles, includingCongressional Government, which won him both critical acclaim and a Ph.D degree.
  5. He was a successful lecturer, faculty leader, and football coach.
  6. He was elected President of Princeton in 1902. President’s Grover Cleveland and Theodore Roosevelt both attended his inauguration.
  7. In 1911, he served one term as the governor of New Jersey.

Presidential Facts

  1. He was the first president to cross the Atlantic ocean while in office.
  2. He lowered tariff rates and established Federal Income Tax.
  3. He established the federal reverse system.
  4. After many diplomatic attempts to end World War 1 , he asked congress to declare war on Germany on April 2, 1917.
  5. He allowed sheep graze on thw Whithouse lawn during World War 1. Their wool was used to raise money for the Red Cross.
  6. He signed the peace treaty with Germany to end the war in 1919.
  7. He recieved the Noble Peace prize for efforts to end World War 1 and establish a league of nations.
  8. He established the practice of holding presidential press confrences.
