Ronald W. Reagan (1981-1989)

Personal Facts:

  1. Born in Tampico, Illinois, he was the younger of two sons born to Nelle and John Reagan.
  2. He won a scholarship to study at Eureka College, a disciples of Christ college near Peoria, Illinois.
  3. He majored in economics and was president of the school body, he took part in many extracurricular activities, including football and being captain of the swimming team.
  1. He was very intrested in acting but when he graduated in 1932, the only available job related to show business was as a sportscaster. In 1936, he became a sportscaster for station WHO in Des Moines, Iowa.
  2. In 1937, he went to Hollywood and started an acting career that spanned more than 25 years and more than 50 films. He was elected president of the Screen Actors Guild six times.
  3. He married actress Jane Wyman and they had two children: Maureen and Michael, an adopted son. Unfortunately, after eight years, the marriage ended in divorce and he married another actress, Nancy Davis. They had two children: Patricia and Ronald.
  4. After supported and helped many republicans campaign with his celebrity status, he was finally asked to run for governor of California in  1966. He defeated his opponent with almost a million votes. He went on to serve two terms.
  5. In 1968, he lost the Republican presidential nomination to Richard M. Nixon.
  6. Again in 1976, he lost the Republican presidential nomination, this time to Gerald Ford. But when Ford lost to Democrat, Jimmy Carter in presidential election, many delegate believed Reagan would have stood a better chance. He began preparing himself for the 1980 election which he later won.

  1. He broke the ““twenty-year curse” in which every president elected in a year ending with o, died in office.
  2. He vigorously pursued tax and budget cuts, an policy later known as “Reaganomics.”
  3. He ordered an invasion of Grenada in 1983 to break up the Marxist coup.
  4. He launched air strikes on Libya in 1986 in response to Libya’s support of terrorism.
  5. Signed the Intermediate  Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty with the Soviet Union in 1987.
