William McKinley (1897-1901)

Personal Facts:

  1. He was the 7th of nine children.
  2. He enrolled at Polland Seminary, a private school, and studied there for eight years.
  3. During the civil war, he enlisted in the 23rd Ohio volunteer infantry.
  4. In 1866, he attended law school in Albany, New York.
  1. He married Ida Saxton two years after they met in 1869.
  2. Due to the death of their daughter and Typhoid fever, for the rest of her life his wife suffered from seizures and bouts of mental depression.
  3. In 1869, he was elected prosecuting for Stark county.

Presidential Facts

  1. He pushed the Dingley Tariff Act.
  2. He introduced the “Open Door Policy.”
  3. He supported the annexation of Hawaii in 1898
  4. In 1901,  he was shot twice by Leon  Czolgosz, an anarchist (A person who hates any type of government) while greeting with visitors at a fair in Buffalo and died eight days after the shooting.
