Lyndon B. Johnson (1963-1969)

Personal Facts:

  1. Born in Gillespie County, Texas, in 1908, he was the oldest of five children.
  2. He grew up in a family of farmers.
  3. In 1913, his family abandoned their farm and moved to nearby Johnson City. He attended school here and graduated one of the six seniors in the class of 1924 at Johnson City High school.
  4. In 1927, with money borrowed from a bank, he went to nearby San Macros enrolled in Southwest Texas Teachers College.
  1. In 1928, he inturrupted his education to take up a job as a principle of a school for Mexican children in the town of Cotulla. he returned to school the following year.
  2. In August, 1930, he graduated with a degree in history and took a position teaching public speaking at Sam Houston High School where his uncle was chairman of the history department.
  3. His first political position was private secretary of newly elected congressman Richard M. Kleberg of Corpus Christi.
  4. In 1934, he married Claudia Alta. (“Lady Bird”) Taylor, who had just graduated from the University of Texas. The couple had two daughters Lynda Bird, in 1944, and Lucia baines, in 1947.
  5. On April 10, 1937, he won a special election resulting in the death of his congressman. He won 8280 votes, 3000 more than the next highest candidate.
  6. In 1941, he ran for for a seat in the House of Senate, but was unsuccessful.
  7. After the Pearl Harbor Bombing, he became one of the first congressmen to join the military. He was a member of the US Naval Reserve and went on a seven-month tour of duty as lieutenant commander.
  8. In 1948, he ran for senate again. This time he was successful. He also became a senate minority and majority leader. At 46, he became the youngest senate majority leader.
  9. During the 1960 election, John F. Kennedy offered him vice-presidential nomination, which he accepted.

Presidential Facts

  1. He signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, outlawing racial discrimination.
  2. Proposed the ““Great Society,” a program that spurred reforms in voting rights, education, medical care, and housing.
  3. He sent combat troops to South Vietnam in 1965.
  4. Forged agreements with the Soviet Union regarding the nonproliferation and use of nuclear weapons.
  5. He signed the Medical Care Act of 1965, which established the medicare program to provide medical insurance for senior citizens.
