Warren G. Harding (1921-1923)

Personal Facts:

  1. He was the first child of George and phoebe Dickerson Harding. He was born on a farm near corisca (now Blooming Grove), Ohio.
  2. When he was seven, his family moved to nearby Caledonia where he went to school and played in the village band.
  3. In 1879, he entered to Ohio Central College.
  1. He spent spare time and vacations working on the family farm and the local sawmill. He also breifly worked  on the Toledo and Ohio Central Railroad.
  2. In 1882, the family moved to Marion, Ohio, where he studied law, sold insurance, and taught in a school, but he never liked any of the occupations.
  3. Because he managed his college newspaper, he finally decided to take a job as a printer, pressman, and reporter at the Marion Democratic Mirror.
  4. He liked his work but did not like the political views of the paper so in 1884, he and a friend purchased a smaller unsuccessful paper called the Marion Star. Very soon the paper prospered and he bought out his partner.
  5. In 1891, at the age of 26, he married a widow, Florence King De Wolfe.
  6. After joining the Republican party in 1898 and 1900, he was elected to the Ohio State Senate.
  7. In 1903, with the help of a friend, Harry M. Daugherty, who was an influential lawyer and politician, he was elected lieutenant governor of Ohio where he served a two-year term. He left the political arena till 1910, when he lost the campaign for govornor.

Presidential Facts

  1. He was the first president to speak on the radio and have one in the White House.
  2. He was the first president to visit Canada and Alaska.
  3. He Approved the Immigration Restriction Act of 1921, which placed the first U.S. quotas on immigration.
  4. He called the Washington conference 0f 1921-1922.
  5. He appointed a cabinet secretary who later accepted bribes for federal oil field leases in the Teapot Dome Scandal.
  6. He died of a heart attack after only two years in office.
