Jimmy Carter (1977-1981)

Personal Facts:

  1. Born in Plains, Georgia, in 1924, he was the oldest of four children.
  2. His father was a peanut farmer and store keeper so he helped a lot with farm work.
  3. He was the first person in his family to go to college. In 1941, he went to Georgia Southwestern College, the following year he went to Georgia Institute of Technology. He then went to the Naval Academy Annapolis, graduating in 1946, ranked 60th out of 820.
  1. After graduation he married Rosalynn Smith, his high school sweetheart. They had three sons and a daughter.
  2. In 1953, he left the army and went home to take care of the family peanut farm when his father was diagnosed with cancer.
  3. He served two terms in the state senate and in 1966, ran for the democratic nomination for governor of Georgia. He lost and was very bitter. It was at this point he said he turned to God and became an evangelist.
  4. He ran for governor again in 1970 and won.
  5. Half way through his term as governor, he decided to run for president and won the election of 1976.

Presidential Facts

  1. He pardoned draft resisters of the Vietnam War.
  2. ..He signed the Panama Canal Treaty in 1977, agreeing to turn over administration of the canal to Panama in 1999.
  3. Facilitated the Camp David Accords in 1978, Which led to the peace treaty between Israel and Egypt.
  4. He published many books including The Little Baby Snoogle Fleejer, illustrated by his daughter, Amy.
  5. He studied Nuclear Physics and contributed to the development of the nuclear submarine.
