Welcome, the 20th century in the United States is a very extraordinary time in the fact that most of, or if I may say, all of the “technological evolution” took place in this era. Some people still with us may have seen the first television broadcast in 1939 and laugh at it in comparison to the thousands of channels we have due to satellite and cable networks. Through all the wars that have been fought, it is hard for us to count the numerous changes encountered in weaponry, war tactics, and machinery. Alan Shepard’s Mercury expedition on May 5, 1961 was a nationwide celebration, nowadays people travel to space so much it isn’t even showed on the news. Though we may have had so many technological achievements, I strongly believe that the most significant of these achievements is the computer, how it has evolved, and how vitally important it is in our society today. Today one could sit in his bedroom and watch live footage, half way around the world. You can have a conversation with a relative away on vacation, and at the same time, download some songs to add too your “oldies” collection and burn to a CD when you have all the songs you’ve been looking for. You can even apply to colleges, buy anything you want, pay bills, and manage accounts all over the world with just the click of a mouse. All this didn’t happen overnight, it all happened through the long process known as evolution.

            This century in the United States is not only known for its technological achievements, but also for the achievements in society as well. Your grandparents can tell you how many different people and groups in society have fought for all the things we now consider normal today. A crucial example of this were women of the early 20th century who fought for equality until the women gained the right to vote in 1920. Another example were the civil rights movements of the 50’s and 60’s which now allow us attend integrated schools, drink water from the same fountains, and even protect us from the racial violence suffered by many people in that era. Still moving forward in time women once again fought for what we now know as the Equal Rights Amendment.

            For all the wars fought, laws passed, technological barriers being broken, there is someone behind it to thank or learn more about. This is the purpose of our site, to briefly go through the events of the 20th in the United States and let people read and see for themselves what it took to live life the way we do today. With this, we ask you to join us as we take you to see the writings on the wall that make up the history of the 20th century  United States.
