The area of Dream work has a long history and there has been a lot of work in the area of psychology and dream analysis. This section focuses on the prominent ideas of the major psychologists who have developed theories on dream interpretation and its relation to the human mind.

Theorists like Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, Fritz Perls, Alfred Adler and many more provide approaches and ideas about dreams that are both similar and different. Sigmund Freud claims that dreams carry our hidden desires and while Carl Jung suggests that dreams carry symbolic meaning, but not always hidden desires. Carl Jung also says that these suggests that dreams can be analyzed and interpreted on more than one level including psychic.

Along with Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, Fredric Perls uses what is called the Gestalt approach, which is seen as a holistic approach. The Gestalt perspective is different than Freud’s and Jung’s, in that dream objects are not seen so much as symbols, but an important personal link to the person from which they arise.

We cannot say that any one of these theories are more truthful than another. Each has it’s own reasons for specific focus. We can only use these theories as a guide and decide for oursleves what we believe will help us to better understand our own dream.
