11.The Undergrounds

  The majority of the castles and, especially, the majority of the donjons closed undergrounds more or less vast and which had different destinations. The most of them served as storehouses; in some of them were confined the prisoners; the other, having the way out at enough distance from the castle, which appertained to it, it seems like, in some localities, offered a way to communicate, in secret, with the plain and to leave the castle when its defense became impossible.
