Pollutant : Sulphur dioxide

Characteristics: It is a colourless, reactive gas that is odourless at low concentrations but has a pungent smell at very high concentrations. Sulphur dioxide is highly soluble in water, resulting in the formation of sulphurous acid.

Source:
It is formed primarily from combustion of fossil fuels containing sulphur. Diesel vehicles and industrial emissions are the more important sources in urban areas.

Effect: Exposure to high levels of sulphur dioxide may reduce lung function and cause respiratory illness. In the atmosphere, sulphurous acid is easily converted to sulphuric acid which is the major acidic component of acid rain which erodes stones of buildings and makes soil acidic and unsuitable for plant growth.
