Air pollution index

Two air pollution indices are issued in Hong Kong : the general Air Pollution Index and the Roadside Air Pollution Index. The former represents the quality of air which most people will experience at home, in school or at work. The latter represents the quality of air in busy streets. Hong Kong is the first city in the world to issue a Roadside Air Pollution Index on a regular basis.

More about API

The Air Pollution Index (API) has been developed in Hong Kong since June 1995. It is a simple way of describing air pollution levels to provide timely information about air pollution to the public and to enhance awareness. It serves also as an alert to the public before the onset of serious air pollution episodes and helps the general public, especially susceptible groups such as those with heart or respiratory illnesses, to consider taking precautionary measures when necessary.

The API is calculated using data from 8 monitoring stations and taking into consideration five major pollutants. It is calculated for the three different air quality areas: urban, industrial and new development by using results from corresponding monitoring stations.
