From the beginning, the man lived in groups. Work in common gave him the possibility to easily assure the food, to make and perfect tools, defend from enemies or natural disasters.
The development of human society and its progress during the ages is owed to work. Among the people, different leaders have raised, leaders who understood their needs, goals and saw the way of progress.
The History is the science that studies the development of mankind from the earliest times until today, with all its aspects (economic, social and politic).
All the historical events happened in a certain time. They cannot be fully understood unless we precisely establish the date when it happened. The dates show if an event happened before or after another, if those events are close or with periods of tents, hundreds of thousands of years.
The Chronology (chronos=time; logos=science) is the science that studies the historical dates. In history the time is calculated on years, decades (10 years periods), centuries (100 years periods) and millenniums (1000 years periods). The history is separated in 2 great eras (periods): before our era-before Jesus Christ (BC) and our era-after Jesus Christ (AD). The limit between them is represented by year 1 (that is the 31st year of the ruling of the Roman leader Augustus), the year of birth of Jesus Christ. A Romanian monk invented this system, used by many countries.

Other nations start the year count by other criteria: the Egyptians-after the pharaohs, the Greeks-after the Olympic games, the Romans- after the date when, according to the legend, Rome was founded.
