Consumerism was the main theme of the 1980s. Customers
were brand-conscious, causing designers to fit their demands. Shopping was
now focused on departmental stores and less emphasis was placed on
individual shops. Women demanded for more "strength" in their
dressing. Power clothes needed power shoes.

On the other hand, athletic shoes molded in plastic and rubber
was gaining popularity. Nike shoes made its debut in the early 80s, taking the
world by storm.

Manufacturers of sports footwear were all out to beat each
other in design and technology. Now sports shoes were made for all people
of different financial backgrounds.
