Apart from the emphasis on informal wear and separates, clothes for more convectional men in the later 1970s settled back, for the most part, into a pattern of classic styles in subdued colours with undramatic modifications in cut and styling from season to season. The early 1980s has nevertheless seen a revival of interest in male fashion but designers have been exploring a new direction, moving from the established, structured nature of men’s garments towards new concepts of shape and fit.

Men's fashion in the 1980s saw greater varieties. There was a jumble of different styles carried forward from the 1970s. Remnants of Punk, Hippies interwhined with newer trends like the "worn" jeans and high-collared demin jackets.

Suits were not as tight fitting as in the 70s, the sides of the coat no longer cut in at the waist. A straighter sideline was preferred. Trousers had no flarings and were straight-cut and wide at the legs.

"Parachute" pants became in fashion. These were pants narrower at the ankle, in contrast to the flare-bottom trousers.
