The 70s was a decade of upset and turmoil. The Watergate
scandal, Vietnam War, Civil Right movement and greater cynicism within
society were a few of the events. As a result, cultures and subcultures
developed rapidly, creating the so-called Punk and Glam movements.

Self-expression took on another level as designers pushed the
envelope-- creating more outrageous designs mainly for celebrities like Cher,
Elton John and many others. The media also took a great role in defining
fashion. Television shows like Charlie's Angels influenced the fashion
trends readily.

However, in the later part of the decade, political
unrest and economic depression shook society. People were more pragmatic and
sought for more "down to earth" designs.

The natural look took centre stage as well. Sandals and
boots were popular amongst all.

The debut of the film Saturday Night Fever brought in
the disco fever. Afros, colour coordinated outfits, heels for men and strappy
heels for women were distinct of the disco craze. However, this did not last
long before they were out of fashion.
