The 70s was a decade of upset and turmoil. The Watergate scandal, Vietnam War, Civil Right movement and greater cynicism within society were a few of the events. As a result, cultures and subcultures developed rapidly, creating the so-called Punk and Glam movements.

Self-expression took on another level as designers pushed the envelope-- creating more outrageous designs mainly for celebrities like Cher, Elton John and many others. The media also took a great role in defining fashion. Television shows like Charlie's Angels influenced the fashion trends readily.

*Open-toed platform shoes for ladies. Worn as everyday wear.

However, in the later part of the decade, political unrest and economic depression shook society. People were more pragmatic and sought for more "down to earth" designs.

*Shoes made out of plastic gave people the invisible effect.

The debut of the film Saturday Night Fever brought in the disco fever. Afros, colour coordinated outfits, heels for men and strappy heels for women were distinct of the disco craze. However, this did not last long before they were out of fashion.

*Black suede with gold kid knee high boots made by Yves Saint Laurent in 1976.
