| New developments in the
production of man-made fibres resulted in lighter weight and crease-resistant
suiting and drip-dry shirts, which added to the new, neat, well-pressed look of
men’s clothes. It was further emphasized by the spiky appearance of
fashionable footwear, now much lighter with longer, pointed toes. Even teenagers
followed this line: jeans were straight and very narrow in cut and combined with
‘winkle picker’ shoes. In reaction to the rather fashion-conscious Mods, the
Rockers of the earlier 1960s affected a tougher, ‘motor-bike’ dress with the
addition of studded leather jackets and longer, greased hair.
