The 1930s was marked by the Great Depression. The crash of the Wall Street, meant more and more people faced unemployment. Gone were the days of elegance, here were the days of practicality.

* Deep plum suede court shoe with an unusual highcut ankle detail.

For outdoor activities, short ankle boots were used. Sandals also became more prominent in fashion as beachwear flourished.

* A low-heeled sandal by Bally,1934. Cross-over foot straps with red, black and while striped grosgrain ribbon.

On the eve of World War 2, an explosion of bright colours occurred. Pastel colours were used more and more in beachwear and other outdoor wear.

Comfort became a key factor for women's wear. Heels were made to match the businesslike suits. The Louis-heel was replaced by lower, more angular and broader ones.

*Python skin with buttoned bar shoe, 1930, by Charles Jourdan.

Hollywood played an important role in the setting of trends. Sex appeal jumped bravely from the screen and glamour came into mainstream consciousness. The "in" look was cool, sleek and sheer.

*Evening shoe with apricot satin and embroidered spots. Gold leather straps produced in Switzerland in 1930.

Glamour was the key word. Inspired by Hollywood stars, women wore more elaborate shoes. Most shoes were pointed with golden lace.

* Evening shoe in printed leather with rhinestone decorated tie and flower fastening by Charles Jourdan in1936-37.

*Ankle boots from Ferragamo. Gold brocade designed for evening wear.

Platform shoes made their debut in Salvatore Ferragamo, Roger Vivier and André Perugia's designs. Platforms were made of cork and glued together , creating a wedge.

*1939 design by Salvatore Ferragamo. Made of velvet uppers and multi-layered platform and through sole.

For day wear, platforms were made with and inverted "V" cut between the heel and the sole to allow freedom of movement.

*Platform with elongated heel to give a Japanese feel. Worn by film star Gloria Swanson.

Sneakers gained popularity as well. Evening shoes had to be sturdier yet combining luxurious silks, velvets and satins. Suede and kid had to take second stage. Day shoes were mostly black throughout the decade. Wine, maroon and navy blue were quite popular as well.

Men's shoes in the 1930s mainly consisted of brogues. A rough look seem to be a hit with the men. Loafers made their first appearance as fashionable style.

*1936, two-tone brogue with calf saddle and unusual 'cut-outs'.
