In
the 1930s there was a parallel emphasis on the slimness and flatness of the
hips, accentuated by the width of the shoulders. The cut of the male jacket
became increasingly boxy in shape, accentuated by shoulder padding, wide lapels
and the double-breasted fastening which was particularly fashionable. Trousers
legs corresponded in shape by being cut wide with turn-ups at the hem. Knitted
waistcoats, sleeveless pullovers and sweaters were popular informal wear.
