The 1990s were a century marked by tradition and social
decorum. With restrictive clothing did not allow for much self-expression.
Skirts were ankle length, thus shoes were hardly seen. Shoes were kept to
buttoned and laced boots, chosen for cut and quality, rather than
style.

Court shoes originated from Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine. Her
lover Bernard de Bertand, introduced long gowns accompanied by pointed
court shoes. Crammed toes were a mark of religious piety. |
|
Evening shoes worn on social functions were elaborate and
valuable. Designed with precious stones from all four corners of the
world, only royalty could afford such shoes. Louis heels were less than 2
inches high.

These were often embellished with embroidery or metallic
thread and glass or jet beading on the toes—often the only part peeking
out from a voluminous skirt. |

*Medium-heeled pumps or
court shoes began to be worn when hemlines rose above the ankles.

Shoe fabric was kept to warm, dull
colours. Maroon, brown, black and white dominated the scene. Flashy
colours were not socially accepted and viewed as of the lower
classes.
*Using
burgundy kid leather was rather popular. It combined embroidery, comfort and a low curved
Louis- heel.
