Neural networks : Introduction : Types of NN's (5 of 5)

d. They are error-tolerant
Neural networks has an amazing ability to recognize patterns (e.g letters or speech) even if they are very blurred or distorted, in this applet you can see the network's ability to recognize a letter, even though there is a lot of distortion in the image.

The brain is also known to be able to function properly, even though several of the synaptical connections has been broken, or in other way disabled. In a conventional computer today, a breach in one of the connections could be catastrophically, but the neural network would be tied together so well, that even though a couple of synapses where disabled, the network would still be able to work.
