Neural networks : Introduction : NN History (3 of 5)

This astonishing discovery gave new courage to the scientists. Now it was simple to build large networks and there after assign them to problems, which were impossible with the conventional programming.

The neural network was incredible when it should recognise patterns. Though, the future wasn't as bright as it had appeared at first glance. In 1969 Marvin Minsky and Seymour Papert showed in their thesis, that the neural network was incapable of handling an XOR operation. This problem was later resolved by the so-called hidden neurons.

Minsky and Papert showed other weaknesses in the neural network. Especially the popular training of the networks was a problem. If the number of inputs increased, the time to train the network would increase exponentially, and thereby set a limit of the efficiency of the network.
