On August 5, 1982, the Hiroshima Monument
for the A-bomb Victims was dedicated
in the
greenbelt on the riverbank opposite
Peace
Memorial Park. The monument is the
result
of a devoted campaign carried out by
the
Executive Committee of the Hiroshima
High
School Student Peace Seminar (chairman
Hiroki
Kono, 3rd year student at Sotoku High
School). They excavated roof tiles from the bombing from the bed of the Motoyasu River and appealed to the public for thier preservation. The monument consists of a bronze statue standing on a pedestal. The pedestal is 3 meters wide, 1.5 meters high and 0.7 meters deep. The statue is the work of Hisashi Akutagawa, professor at Hijiyama Women's Junior College. It depicts the souls of A-bomb victims ascending to heaven. On the front of the pedestal there is a panel of A-bomb tiles with anepitaph. On the back are a relief depicting the excavation work, a picture taken immediately after the A-bomb explosion, and a ceramic tablet with an an explanation in English and Japanese. The epitaph reads: "When the sky turned suddenly light, my bosy began to melt. Friends around the world, join in the cry from Hiroshima!" |
