It was exactly like a thunderbolt from the clear sky. At 8:15 on August 6, 1945 our hometown Hirosima was demolished in an instant by a single atomic bomb, creating a hell on earth. Our school had become a shipbuilding school, but on that day the 270 students who were on duty perform ing demolition work in the city along with three members of the school staff were all killed.
Your experience is so sad and pitiful that we do not know what to say to you, you who were young and had such a noble patriotic concern for our country. we pray for the repose of your souls and give our pledge that such a tragedy shall nit be repeated by human beings.
We also remember the souls of the graduates of our school who died so bravely in battle in this war and have become guardian spirits of our country. May this stone preserve our feelings ffor many generations. August 6, 1963. The Alumni Association of the Hiroshima Municipal Commercial School, the Bereaved Families of the Shipbuilding Technical High School."
As already described, at the time of the explosion 270 studens and three teachers were at work removing houses near the prefectural office building (in Kako-machi ). They were all killed. Later the students' lunch boxes and unburnt pieces of their clothes were found. However, their ashes could not be identified. Some of the studens jumped into the nearby Hon River and died there. @@
