This figure is in what was formerly Nakajima-hon-machi,
a busy business area which was burned to
the ground and most of its residents killed
when the A-bomb fell. After the war, this
area was included in Peace Memorial Park.
Surviving residents gathered and formed the
Nakajima-hon-machi Association. They erected this figure on August 6, 1956, as an expression of their regret at parting with their old community which had ceased to exist, and as a prayer for the repose of the deceased. On the front of the pedestal is carved, "Merciful Goddess for Peace," on the back "Ah, Nakajima-hon-machi! August 6,1956 Tadao Watanabe, Mayor of Hiroshima." In front of this figure there is a map of Nakajima-hon-machi before the A-bombing, which was made by its former residents. The names of those who lived in Nakajima-hon-machi and died in the A-bombing are inscribed on the stone tablet beside the figure. |
