The Atomic Bomb Memorial Mound is located
in the northwestern corner of Pwace Memorial
Park. This mound, modeled after an imperial
mausoleum of the Momoyama Era, has a small
monu-ment on its top. Inside the mound are
placed the ashes of tens of thousands of
victims of the A-bombing. Most of these are
unidentified. When identified, they are handed
over to relaves. Immediately after the bombing,
countless dead bodies were carried here since
the area where the mound is located at present
was near the center of the bombing. The dead
boding were cremated by rescue squads and
the ashs were gathered together here. In January 1946, an interreligious group, the Society for Praying for the War Dead, was organized. A temporary memorial mound was built in May and a temporary vault and chapel in July with money contributed by citizens. In July 1955, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the bombing, a new vault was completed at municipal expense, and the ashs which had been kept in various place were placed there. On August 6, every year, a memorial service is held by the people of Hiroshima with the help of the Hiroshima Religious Federation. |
