The percussion section is basically the section that provides the band with all the various background sounds. In this section, there are the MOST kinds of instruments, at least 10. The basic ones are the drums. But they can range from the drums to the cow bells!

The snare drum can be turned on and off. When on, it produces a very loud and significant sound. When off, the sound is like that of an inside down empty pail. This is usually the 'lead actor' in the percussion

Cymbals are seldom heard in a song, but when they are heard, they are very, very loud. Cymbals produce a crashing sound for usually the loud part of the song, or where there is an accent.![]() Listen. |

Xylophone

The xylophone is somewhat like a piano, it has many, many notes. Except that it can be shifted easily, you use a stick to hit it to produce a sound and it's made of wood, there isn't much difference from a piano. This is also one of the 'lead actors' in the percussion section, as it is relied on for significant melodies. Some instruments very similar to this are the

Timpani

There are a few types of timpani, each large in size, and also quite hollow. The timpani's sound can be adjusted by a little adjuster at its side. The timpani has loud, scary sounds, which are often used to signify that trouble is approaching, or when the song is ending the timpani is played. Sometimes it will also be played during the 'high' par, or that chorus of a song. It is also called the kettle drum.![]() Listen. |
