As mentioned in the previous step of Succession, the Jack Pines and other plants of the Jack Pine forest add more organic components to the Dune and allow for a final step in Succession, known as the Wooded Dune or the "Moist Forest." It is nicknamed the "Moist Forest" because there is a lot more moisture in the sandy ground and in the air. On a hot summer day, the canopy of thick trees can make it seem as much as ten degrees cooler inside the forest as compared to the beach. The Wooded Dune contains many noteable trees. The taller canopy creating trees are Black Oaks, Hickories, Basswoods, and Ashes. There are also smaller trees on the Wooded Dune, such as Sassafras, Dogwood, Hazel Shrub, and Ironwood trees.
