The Jack Pine forest is often referred to as the "Dry Forest" because there is still sand found here, and it is very dry like the previous stage of Succession. The Jack Pine is a forest filled with Jack Pines of course, which create a dense net of branches and roots that slow down Dune movement almost to a halt. Jack Pine trees are normally never found this far south, but are found on the Indiana Dunes. They were brought here by glacial movement during The Ice Age. The glacier moved down from the north, capturing Pine trees and carrying them to the area known as the Dunes. Along with the Pine trees, Bearberries, a plant that grows very low to the ground, was brought to the Dunes and grows in the Jack Pine forest today. These trees add more organic components to the Dune and allow for yet another step in Sucession, Wooded Dune. Also interspersed among the jack pines and the bearberries are Prickly Pear cacti. These were dropped off as the glaciers were receding to the north and east.
