The beginning of Dunes Succession is The Beach, pictured below. Here at The Beach, sand is washed up onto the shore. From here, the winds flowing inland from Lake Michigan move the sand further inland. The Beach is the unpopulated and inorganic area described in the definition of Primary Succession. The sand rarely has plants growing on it this close to the shoreline.
