Notes: Meiosis I

synapsis.  when homologs come together in pairs and the arms of some of the chromatids overlap forming chiasma

homolog.  has 2 chromatids

Prophase

homolog chromosomes criss-cross at numerous locations (sing. chiasmata)
chiasma holds the homologs together
comprises 90 percent of the time needed for meiosis to take place

Metaphase

chromosomes arrange themselves (still paired) along the metaphase plate halfway between centrosomes
spindle fibers begin to pull the homologs apart

Anaphase

sister chromatids remain attached
1 homologue of each pair move to a like centrosome

Telophase
and
Cytokinesis

cleavage furrows
