Multicellularity in plants occurs in both haploid and diploid cell congregations.  There is an alternation of generations.
  (Right)  In a diploid organism (2n), meiosis produces gametes (n) that later fuse (fertilization) to form a diploid zygote that differentiates into a diploid organism by means of meiosis.
In fungi and algae the predominant stage is haploid, recombining only to provide more genetic diversity in the species.
