Notes: Meiosis Terminology

locus.  the gene specific location along the length of DNA
asexual.  the natural "cloning" of an organism where 1 organism becomes 2 without procreating with another organism or itself (self fertilization)

lifecycle.  a generation to generation sequence
somatic.  non-reproductive cells (non-spermocyte, non-oocyte)
karyotype.  an ordered display of chromosomes
homologs or homologues.  chromosome pairs having the same length, centromere position, and staining pattern (polymorphisms may hinder karyotyping by changing the appearance of one homolog)

X, Y.  the homolog exception (sex chromosomes)
autosomes.  non-sex chromosomes (non-X, non-Y)
sperm and ova.  gametes containing 22 autosomes + 1 X or 1 Y (human)
haploid.  n number of chromosomes
diploid.  2n number of chromosomes
syngamy.  fertilization or gamete union or zygote production or the joining of sperm and egg
gametes.  the only cells not produced by mitosis
