Notes: Reaction Classes

There are 5 classes of reactions (rxns): Functional Group Addition, Rearranging of Internal Bonds (structural rearrangement), Condensation, Hydrolysis and Energy Transfer.

Condensation (depolymerization) is the breakdown and synthesis of polymers.  It is the removal of a H at one end of Molecule A and the removal of OH at one end of Molecule B to produce Molecule C and H2O

Hydrolysis (polymerization, or putting things together) is the separation by inserting H2O to form two molecules.

Molecule C + H2O Molecule A + Molecule B

There are four main types of macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids.
