Andromeda




It is a very famous constellation. It represents Princess Andromeda in Greek legends. M31 is a spiral galaxy similar to the shape of the Milky Way but of larger size. It is 240 lightyears away from Earth. Next to it are two smaller galaxies M32 and NGC 205 (M110).




Antlia
It is a dim constellation. It was named by a French astronomer. Antlia symbolizes the Air Pump. The brightest star in this constellation is Alpha Antlia, which magnitude is 4.3.

Apus
It is located near the south pole, south of Centaurus. It is very difficult to recognize. It was named by two Dutch navigators in the 16th Century. It symbolizes the bird of paradise in New Guinea. The brightest star is Alpha Apus which is 3.8 in magnitude.

Aquarius



This famous constellation is located in the zodiac region. It symbolizes a young person pouring water from a jar. Water from the jar is poured towards the mouth of Piscis which is located south of Aquarius. M2, M73, M72, NGC 7009 and NGC 7293 is located near Aquarius. The Sun passes through this constellation between Feb 26 and Mar 11.




Aquila



It is located in the celestial equator of the sky. It symbolizes an old eagle bringing thunder and lightning from the Greek sky gods. The Milky Way strikes through Aquila. Alpha Aquilae is the 12th brightest star in the sky, which is 0.8 in magnitude. It is 17 lightyears away from Earth. It is located in the neck of the Eagle.




Ara
It is located on the Milky Way, south of Scorpius. The Greek thought of it as an altar. There is another saying that the Centaur is making offerings to the Wolf. NGC 6193 (magnitude 6) and NGC 6397 which is 7000 lightyears away from Earth, is located near Ara.

Aries




It represents the Ram in Greek mythology. Alpha Arietis, Beta Arietis and Gamma Arietis are three prominant stars that are easily recognized. Gamma Arietis is a blue star which is of magnitude 4.6. It was discovered by a British scientist in 1664. It is one of the earliest double stars found.




Auriga


It symbolizes the Charioteer. According to some legends, it symbolizes the King of Athens. Alpha Aurigae is the 6th brightest star in the sky with a magnitude of 0.1. It is yellow in color to the naked eye. Spectroscopic analysis shows that it is a binary star. It is 42 lightyears away from Earth. M36, M37 and M38 are located near Auriga, and they are 4000 to 4500 lightyears away from Earth. Epsilon Aurigae is an eclipsing binary star which is between 2.9 and 3.8 in magnitude.



Bootes




It symbolizes a Herdsman guarding a bear, which is Ursa Major. The brightest star, Arcturus, means "guarding a bear". It is the 4th brightest star in the sky. It is a red star which is 100 times brighter than our Sun.





Caelum
It is a small and dim constellation which is not easy to recognize. It is located in the southern hemisphere in a hidden area. It represents the Chisel. It was named by a French astronomer in the 18th century. The brightest star is Alpha Caeli which is 4.4 in magnitude. Gamma Caeli is a binary star. The primary star is 4.6 in magnitude while the secondary star is 8 in magnitude.

Camelopardalis
It is a dim constellation located in the northern hemisphere. It symbolizes the Camelopardus or the Giraffe. It was named by a Dutch astronomer in the 17th century. Beta Camelopardalis is a binary star which primary star is 4.0 in magnitude and the secondary star is 7.4 in magnitude. NGC 1502 is located near Camelopardalis.

Cancer


In Greek mythology, it symbolizes the Crab that was being stomped into pieces during a fight between Hercules and Hydra. It is the dimest constellation located in the zodiac region. The Sun passes through this constellation between Jul 20 and Aug 10. The brightest star is Zeta Cancri which is 3.5 in magnitude. M44 and M67 is located in Cancer. M44 (Praesepe) is 520 lightyears away from Earth while M67 is 2600 lightyears away from Earth.



Canes Venatici
It symbolizes two hunting dogs of the Herdsman (Bootes). It was named by an astronomer in 1678. Alpha Canum Venaticorum is a binary star which is composed of two white stars of magnitude 2.9 and 5.6. M3 and M51 is located near Canes Venatici.

Canis Major



One of the most notable constellations in the sky, it has the brightest star in the sky - Alpha Canis Majoris. Canis Major (The Greater Dog) and Canis Minor (The Lesser Dog) represents the two dogs following Orion. Alpha Canis Majoris is -1.44 in magnitude. It is 20 times brighter than the Sun and it is only 8.6 lightyears away from Earth. It is a white binary star. M41 and NGC 2362 is located near Canis Major.



Canis Minor



Canis Minor (The Lesser Dog) and Canis Major (The Greater Dog) are the two dogs following Orion. It has not much features, so Canis Major and Orion helps us to recognize it. Alpha Canis Minoris is the 8th brightest star in the sky. In Greek mythology, Alpha Canis Minoris is named "Procyon", meaning "in front of the dog". It is a white star 11.4 lightyears away from Earth.




Capricornus




It is the smallest constellation located in the zodiac region. It symbolizes the Sea Goat with a fish tail. Its origin is from the Middle East. Capricornus is not noticable. Delta Capricorn is of magnitude 2.9. The Sun passes through Capricornus between Jan 19 and Feb 26.




Carina
It is an easily recognized constellation which has the 2nd brightest star in the sky - Alpha Carinae. Carina is located in the brightest part of the Milky Way. It symbolizes the Keel while Alpha Carinae is the captain. Alpha Carinae is of magnitude -0.6. It is a white supergiant star which is 14000 times brighter than the Sun and it is 310 lightyears away from Earth. Eta Carinae is a a variable star. It is now of magnitude 6, but in the 19th century, it was as bright as magnitude -1. Eta Carinae may be 100 times more massive than our Sun. It is the largest star known. It is about 8000 lightyears away from Earth, located in NGC 3372. NGC 2516, NGC 3114, NGC 3372, NGC 3532 and IC 2602 is located near Carina.

Cassiopeia


It is easily recognized by its W shape. It represents Queen Cassiopeia in some legends. Its neighbors - Andromeda and Cepheus, are her daughter and husband respectively. According to Greek legends, Queen Cassiopeia always sat in her thrown complaining about her hair. Gamma Cassiopeiae is a variable star which is of magnitude 2.2. Eta Cassiopeiae is a binary star. Its primary star is 3.5 in magnitude while the secondary star is orange in color and is 7.2 in magnitude. The two stars are 19 lightyears apart. M52 and NGC 457 are located near Cassiopeia.


Centaurus



It is a big constellation located south of the Milky Way.It symbolizes the Centaur, which has a horse's legs but a man's body. Alpha Centaur is the 3rd brightest star in the sky which measures to -0.3 in magnitude. It is a multiple star 4.2 lightyears away from our Sun. Beta Centaur is the 11th brightest star in the sky which is of magnitude 0.6. It is 525 lightyears away from Earth. NGC 5139, NGC 3918 and NGC 5128 are also located near Centaurus.



Cepheus



It is located near the north pole, next to Cassiopeia. It is Cassiopeia's husband and Andromeda's father according to Greek mythologies. Alpha Cephei is of magnitude 2.5 and is the brightest star in this constellations. Beta Cephei is both a biary star and a variable star. The brighter one is a blue giant star of magnitude 3.2 and is 600 lightyears away from Earth.




Cetus
Cetus is a big constellation which lies across the celestial equator. It symbolizes the Sea Monster, and Perseus rescued Princess Andromeda from the monster's jaw. Omicron Ceti is a famous variable star. It is a red giant star which is 300 times larger than the Sun. Its magnitude can range from 10 to 2. Its Latin name "Mira" means "extraordinary".

Chamaeleon
Chamaeleon is a small and dim constellation near the south pole. It was named by a Dutch navigator in 16th century. It symbolizes a chamaeleon. The brightest star in this constellation is of magnitude 4. Delta Chamaeleontis is a binary star ver far away, it is 360 lightyears away from Earth. NGC 3195 is located near Chamaeleon.

Circinus
It is a small constellation located near Centaurus. It symbolizes the compasses. Alpha Circini is a binary star. The primary star is of magnitude 3.2, 54 lightyears away. The secondary star is of 8.6 magnitude.

Columba




Columba was founded by a Dutch astronomer in 16th century. It symbolizes the Dove. Alpha Columbae is a white-blue star of magnitude 2.6 and is 270 lightyears away from Earth.





Coma Berenices



It symbolizes the Egyptian Queen's hair. Legends say that she used her hair to thank Sky gods for saving her husband from being killed at war. Coma Berenices is discovered by a Dutch geologist in 16th century. The Greek thought Coma Berenices was Leo's tail. M64 is a spiral galaxy which has a black shadow in the middle. Melotte 111 is located near Coma Berenices and is 260 lightyears away from Earth.



Corona Australis
Greek mythologies suggested that this constellation is Sagittarius's crown. Although the brightest star is only of magnitude 4, it's easily recognized due to its shape. NGC 6541 is located near Corona Australis.

Corona Borealis




It is easily recognized by its semi circle shape. Each star represents a gem of the crown. The brightest star is of 2.2 magnitude and it is named Gemma in Latin. Zeta Coronae Borealis is a binary star which is of 5.0 and 6.0 in magnitude.




Corvus


It is a small constellation located south of Virgo. It represents a crow resting on Hydra. In Greek mythology, Apollo sent the crow to fetch some water with The Cup (Crater). The crow was greedy and stopped during his journey to eat figs. It did not finish the task on time, so it shifted the responsibility on Hydra. Apollo was not fooled by it and punished the crow that it would be thirsty for the rest of its life. The brightest star in this constellation is Gamma Corvi which is of magnitude 2.6. Delta Corvi is a binary star. The primary star is of manitude 3 while the seconday star is magnitude 9. NGC 4038 and NGC 4039 is located near Corvus.


Crater
It is not a very notable constellation. It symbolizes a cup which is associated with Hydra and Corvus in Greek mythology. The brightest star in this constellation is of magnitude 3.6.

Crux


It is the smallest constellation in the sky. When compared to Hydra, it is only one twenteith of its size. Despite its small size, it is one of the most famous and easily recognized constellation due to its shape. The vertical line of the cross points to the south pole. Alpha Crusis is a binary star which is of magnitude 0.8 to the naked eye. It is the 13th brightest star in the sky. It is 320 lightyears away from Earth. Beta Crusis is a white-blue giant star which is 350 lightyears away from Earth, It is of magnitude 1.3 and is the 20th brightest star in the sky. NGC 4755 and the coalsack is located near Crux.



Cygnus

It is a large and easily recognized constellation. It symbolizes the Swan. Beta Cygni represents the swan's beak while Alpha Cygni (Deneb) represents the swan's tail. Deneb is one of the three stars in the Summer Triangle. Alpha Cygni is the brightest star in this constellation which measures to magnitude 1.3, which is the 19th brightest star in the sky. It is a white-blue super giant star which is 3000 lightyears away from Earth. Beta Cygnus is a beautiful binary star which is of magnitude 3.1 and 5.1. When observed under a telescope, the color contrast becomes obvious. The primary star is orange in color while the secondary star is green in color. They are 380 lightyears away from Earth. M39, NGC 6826, NGC 6992 and NGC 7000 are located near Cygnus. Cygnus X-1 is believed to be a blackhole which is the strongest source of X-ray from the sky. The blue giant star is the primary star 8000 lighyears away from Earth, while the invisible secondary star is believed to be the blackhole which orbits the primary star in 5.6 days.

Delphinus



It is a small constellation with a unique shape. The two brightest stars are Alpha Delphini and Beta Delphini. They have strange names like Sualocin and Rotanev respectively. When reversed, they spell the name of an astronomer in the 19th Century - Nicolaus Venator. Gamma Delphini is a binary star. The primary star is yellow in color and is of magnitude 4.3. The secondary star is a white star which is 5.2 in magnitude. It is 100 lightyears away from Earth.



Dorado
It symbolizes the swordfish or the goldfish. It was discovered by a Dutch navigator in the 16th century. The brightest star in this constellation is Alpha Doradus which is of magnatude 3.3. It is a bright Cepheid variable star which has a magnitude between 3.5 and 4.1. It is a yellowish-white super giant star which is 1000 lightyears away from Earth. The Large Magellanic Cloud is one of the Milky Way's companion galaxy. It is 170000 lightyears away. Its mass is about one tenth of the Milky Way, and its diameter is 20000 lightyears. NGC 2070 (Tarantula Nebula) is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Tarantula Nebula's diameter is 800 lightyears across.

Draco



It is a very large constellation in the northern hemisphere which surrounds the whole of Ursa Minor. It symbolizes the Dragon in Greek mythology. Although Draco is a very large constellation, there are not many bright stars. The brightest is the red giant star - Gamma Draconis, which is of magnitude 2.2 and it is 150 lightyears away from Earth. It forms a kite shape with Beta Draconis, Upsilon Draconis and Xi Draconis. NGC 6543 is located near Draco.



Equuleus
It is the second smallest constellation in the sky. The brightest star in Equuleus is Alpha Equulis which is of magnitude 3.9. Epsilon Equulis is a multiple star which is 100 lightyears away from each other. Gamma Equulis is a binary star. The primary star is of magnitude 4.7 and the secondary star is of 6.1 magnitude.

Eridanus




It is a long and meandering constellation which symbolizes the river in Greek mythology. It is the longest of all constellations. Alpha Eridani (Achernar) is a white-blue star of magnitude 0.5. It is the 9th brightest star in the sky.





Fornax
Fornax is not a notable constellation. It was founded by a French astronomer in the 18th century. It symbolizes the Furnace. Alpha Fornacis is the brightest star in this constellation. It is of magnitude 3.8 and is 46 lightyears away from Earth.

Gemini


Gemini is located in the zodiac region. It symbolizes the Twins. Alpha Geminorum and Beta Geminorum are the heads of the twins. The Sun passes through this constellation between Jun 22 and Jul 23. Alpha Geminorum is a famous multiple star which is of magnitude 1.6. It is 50 lightyears away from Earth. Beta Geminorum is the brightest star in this constellation. It is of magnitude 1.3 and is the 17th brightest star in the sky. It is 34 lightyears away from Earth and is an orange-colored giant star. M35 and NGC 2392 is located near Gemini.


Grus
Grus was named by two Dutch navigators in the 16th Century. It symbolizes the Crane. The brightest star is Alpha Gruis which is of magnitude 1.7. Beta Gruis is a red giant variable star 170 lightyears away from Earth. It ranges from magnitude 2.0 to 2.3 without a fixed period of time. Delta Gruis is a binary star which is easily observed by the naked eye. The yellow giant star is 4.0 in magnitude while the red giant star is of 4.1 magnitude.

Hercules



Hercules is not very notable but it is a large constellation. It represents the hero Hercules in Greek legends. Alpha Herculis is the head of Hercules pointing to the south. M13 is located near Hercules. It is the brightest cluster in the northern hemisphere. The brightest star is Beta Herculis which is of magnitude 2.8. Alpha Herculis (Rosalgethi) is a variable red giant star which ranges from magnitude 3-4. M92 is located near Hercules.



Horologium
Horologium is not a famous constellation in the southern hemisphere. It is between the bright Eridanus and Carina, therefore it is not notable. It was found by a French Astronomer. It symbolizes the Pendulum Clock. The brightest star Alpha Horologii is of magnitude 3.9 and the star symbolizes the pendulum.

Hydra



Although Hydra is the largest of all the constellations, it is not very noticable. It symbolizes the Water Snake. The snake's head lies north of the celestial equator. In Greek mythology, it is a nine-headed snake. Alpha Hydrae is an orange star 175 lightyears away from Earth. Its Arabic name "Alphard" means "lonely". It is the brightest star in this constellation with a magnitude of 2. M48, M83 and NGC 3242 are located near Hydra.



Hydrus

It is a constellation near the south pole. It was named by a Dutch navigator in the 16th Century. It sumbolizes the Little Water Snake. The brightest star in this constellation is Beta Hydri, which is of magnitude 2.8.

Indus
It is a constellation in the southern hemisphere. It was named by a Dutch navigator in the 16th Century. It symbolizes an Indian holding a spear and arrows. Alpha Indi is the brightest star in this constellation which is of magnitude 3.1. Epsilon Indi is one of the stars closest to Earth. It is 11.8 lightyears away from Earth and is of magnitude 4.1. It is slightly smaller than the Sun and slightly cooler.

Lacerta
It is not a notable constellation. It is located in the northern hemisphere at the edge of the Milky Way. It was named by a Polish astronomer in the 17th Century. It symbolizes the Lizard. The brightest star in this constellaion is Alpha Lacertae which is of magnitude 3.8.

Leo



A large constellation which symbolizes a lion in a resting position. It is said in Greek legends that Hercules killed Leo as one of his 12 tasks. Leo is a constellation in the zodiac region. The Sun passes through it between Aug 10 and Sep 16. Alpha Leonis is a white-blue giant star 77 lightyears away from Earth. It is of magnitude 1.4. M65, M66, M95 and M96 are located near Leo.




Leo Minor
It is a dim constellation between Ursa Major and Leo. It symbolizes the Cub (The Lesser Lion). The brightest star is of magnitude 3.8. It is very difficult to observe. Beta Leonis Minoris is a binary star of magnitude 4.2. It is 145 lightyears away from Earth.

Lepus



Lepus is a constellation under the feet of Orion. Lepus was named by the ancient Greeks. The brightest star in this constellation - Alpha Leporis is of magnitude 2.6. Alpha Leporis is Arneb in Arabic, which means the large hare. Gamma Leporis is a binary star which is composed of two stars with magnitude 3.6 and 6.2. It is 30 lightyears away from Earth. Omicron Ceti is dark red in color. It ranges from magnitude 6 to 12. M79 and NGC 2017 is located near Lepus.


Libra



Libra is located in the zodiac region, south of the celestial equator. It is between Virgo and Scorpio. It was found by the Romans 2000 years ago. The Sun passes through this constellation between Oct 31 and Nov 23. Alpha Librae is a binary star composed of two stars with magnitude 2.8 and 5.2. Beta Librae is the brightest star in this constellation with a magnitude of 2.6 and has a shade of green.



Lupus
Lupus is located south of Libra in the Milky Way. During Roman times, it symbolizes the Wolf. The brightest star is Alpha Lupi which is of magnitude 2.3. Kappa Lupi is a binary star. The primary star is of magnitude 3.9 and the secondary star is of magnitude 5.7. NGC 5822 is located near Lupus.

Lynx
It is a dim constellation named by a Polish astronomer in the 17th Century. It is located in the northern sky beside Bootes and Ursa Major. It is a large constellation which symbolizes the Cat. The brightest star in this constellation is Alpha Lyncis which is of magnitude 3.1. NGC 2419 is located near Lynx.

Lyra



It is a famous constellation in the northern hemisphere. In Greek mythology, it symbolizes a musician Orpheus playing the harp, but an Arabic astronomer suggested that this constellation looked like a hawk and named the brightest star, Alpha Lyrae, as Vega, which means an old hawk. Vega is one of the stars in the summer triangle. Vega is the 5th brightest star in the sky with a magnitude of 0.0. It is a white-blue star which is 25 lightyears away from Earth. M57, Ring Nebula is located near Lyra.


Mensa
It is a small and dim constellation located near the south pole. It was named by a French astronomer in the 18th Century. It represents the Table Mountain in South Africa. It is near the Large Magellanic Cloud. The brightest star in Mensa is Alpha Mensae of magnitude 5.1. It is an orange star similar to the Sun and it is 30 lightyears away from Earth.

Microscopium
It is a small and dim constellation. It was named by a French astronomer in the 18th Century. It symbolizes the microscope. The brightest stars are Gamma Microscopii and Epsilon Microscopii which are both of magnitude 4.7.

Monoceros



This constellation lies across the celestial equator and the Milky Way. It was named by a Dutch in the 17th Century. It symbolizes the Unicorn in legends. Alpha Monocerotis is the brightest star with a magnitude of 3.9. Beta Monocerotis is a triple star of magnitude 4.6, 5.0 and 5.4. Epsilon Monoceros is a binary star of magnitude 4.4 and 6.7. M50, NGC 2232, NGC 2244 and NGC 2264 is located near Monoceros.



Musca
It is a small constellation located in the Milky Way. It was found by two Dutch navigators. It symbolizes a fly. The brightest star is Alpha Muscae with a magnitude of 2.7. Beta Muscae is a binary star with magnitude of 3.6 and 4.1. Theta Muscae is another binary star which is of magnitude 5.6 and 7.6. The brighter one is a blue super giant star.
Norma
It is a small constellation located in the Milky Way. It was named by a French astronomer in the 18th Century. It symbolizes the Level (a measuring instrument). Gamma Normae is a binary star. The primary star is an orange giant star which is 130 lightyears away from Earth. The secondary star is a yellow super giant star which is a 13000 lightyears from Earth.

Octans
It is located in the south pole. It symbolizes the Octant, it was named by a French astronomer. Epsilon Octantis is the brightest star in this constellation. It is an orange giant star of magnitude 3.7.

Ophiuchus



It is a large constellation which lies across the celestial equator. It symbolizes the Serpent Holder. His hands is holding the Serpent (Serpens). The brightest star in Ophiuchus is Alpha Ophiuchi (Rasalhague), which is of magnitude 2.1. M10, M12, NGC 6633 and IC 4665 are located near Ophiuchus.




Orion

Orion is the prettiest and the most outstanding constellation in the sky. It is located in the celestial equator, it could be seen in most parts of the Earth. The constellation symbolizes the Hunter, which has two dogs following him, and they are Canis Minor and Canis Major. In Greek mythologies, Orion is believed to be the son of Poseison, the God of the Oceans. The belt Orion makes the constellation very easy to recognize. Alpha Orionis, Betelgeuse is a super giant red star which varies from magnitude 0 to 1.3. Betelgeuse means hands in Arabic. It is the 10th brightest star in the sky and is 430 lightyears away from Earth. The brightest star in Orion - Beta Orionis, is a blue super giant star which is of magnitude 0.2. It is the 7th brightest star in the sky. It is 770 lightyears away from Earth. It is called Rigel in Arabic which means foot. Theta-1 Orionis is a multiple star located in the center of the Orion Nebula. Using a telescope, 4 stars can be seen. They are of 5.1, 6.7, 6.7 and 8.0 magnitude. Theta-2 Orionis is a binary star with magnitude of 5.0 and 6.4. Iota Orionis is another binary star with magnitude of 2.8 and 7.0. Observed under the telescope, another binary star could be seen. It is called Struve 747, with magnitudes of 4.8 and 5.7. Sigma Orionis is a famous multiple star. The primary star is of magnitude 3.8 while the others are of magnitude 7 and 9. With the aid of a telescope, a dim triple star could be seen, it is called Struve 761. M42, Orion Nebula is one of the most facinating and bright celestial object. It is seen by the naked eye. It is about 1500 lightyears away from Earth. The Horsehead Nebula is a dim nebula located in Orion. It is famous for its horsehead shape. M43 and NGC 1981 is located in Orion.

Pavo
It symbolizes the Peacock. It was named by two Dutch navigators during the 16th century. The brightest star is Alpha Pavonis, which is of magnitude 1.9. Kappa Pavonis is a Cepheid variable star. It is a yellowish-white super giant star. It varies from magnitude 3.9 to 4.8. It is 540 lightyears away from Earth. NGC 6752 is located near Pavo.

Pegasus





It is the 7th largest constellation in the sky. It symbolizes the Winged-horse.





Perseus

It symbolizes the hero Perseus in Greek mythology. He killed Medusa - a witch who turns people into stone, by chopping her head off. After this task, he saved Princess Andromeda from the sea monster's mouth. NGC 869 and NGC 884 symbolizes the right hand of Perseus. Beta Persei symbolizes the head of Medusa in his left hand. Phoenix
Phoenix is located south of Eridanus. It was named by two Dutch navigators in the 16th Century. It symbolizes a bird risen from death. Alpha Phoenicis is the brightest star in this constellation with a magnitude of 2.4.

Pictor
Pictor was named by an astronomer in the 18th Century. It symbolizes the Easel of a Painter. Beta Pictoris is a white-blue star of magnitude 3.9. It is 63 lightyears away from Earth. Tau Pictoris is a binary star. The primary star is 5.6 in magnitude and the secondary star is of magnitude 6.4.

Pisces

Piscis Austrinus
