hese writings by Calvin develop all the core principles of Protestantism by
the strict literal reading of Christian scripture. The purpose of these commentaries
was to explain the literary method and technique of, and the difficult passages
within literary and historical works. Calvin wrote these commentaries in order
to explain scriptural writings, but in actual fact they seem to argue for and
support Calvin's own theological ideas, which he believed, were backed up by
the Scripture. These writings serve less as an explanation of the Bible than
an explanation of the inner workings of his own personal philosophy of theology,
politics and society.
