orn in Urbino, a center of art at the time. Raphael trained with his father at an early age before later being sent to
study with more gifted artists. Raphael soon traveled to Florence in 1504, where both Leónardo da Vinci and
Michaelangelo were working at the time. Raphael was particularly influenced by Leónardo in his work. One painting
that shows Leónardo's influence is "The Small Cowper Madonna." After this work, Raphael painted several more
paintings of the Madonna and Child. He had a talent for observing changes in the art world and responding to them in
his work.
His famous work "The School of Athens," immortalized great philosophers and was the epitomy of Renaissance
work. Rapheal lived a short time (he died with he was only 38), but in that time he established himself enough to have
influence over artists for years to come.
