The first Europeans that arrived to the American continent observed that the natives smoked in pipe the leaves of the tobacco, and they introduced this practice in Europe by the middle of the XVI
century.
Almost all the tobacco wasted away in pipes, pure or like snuff. This model changed at the beginning of the XX century, when each smoker came consuming more than a thousand cigarettes a year. The general attitude of the society was that the tobacco alleviated tensions and it didn't have noxious effects. During the World War II ,the doctors recommended to send cigarettes to the soldiers. However, the epidemiólogos didn't take in observing that the lung cancer, not very frequent before the XX century, it had increased in a considerable way at the beginning of the decade of 1930. Some organizations began studies comparing the deaths of smokers with the deaths of non smokers during a period of several years, either that they died from cancer or of other causes. On the other hand, the experimental studies with animals demonstrated that many of the chemical substances contained in the smoke of the cigarette are carcinogen. In 1962, the government from United States chose a group of ten scientists so that they analyzed the tests that they prepared. Their conclusions were included in the general report about sanity of 1964, where it was affirmed that smoke is a risk for the health of enough importance to justify the necessity of appropriate actions to remedy it” .The first measure that took place was to include in 1964 a warning in the packs. This warning was reinforced in 1969 until being this way: “The Sanitary Authorities notice that the tobacco can produce health problems”. From 1971 all type of publicity of cigarettes was prohibited in radio and television. In the decades of 1970 and 1980 several cities and states approved laws that demanded reserved spaces for non smokers in the public places and of work. In February of 1990 a federal law prohibited to smoke in all the national flights whose duration went inferior at six hours. In Europe the situation has been similar including in the packs the warning that to smoke is harmful for the health and prohibiting to smoke in the public places. These measures go guided to eradicate this habit so harmful. |
