Thoughts from Canada

What is art?

A reflection of what the creater sees, feels and wishes to express with others.

How would you define art?

Everything that man creates can be viewed and appreciated as "art". A bricklayer who creates a brick arch, a carpenter who designs and build a set of stairs, a cook who bakes a cake, a painter who draws a mural, or a writer who writes a story have all created art. If a viewer, any viewer and even if only the original creater, can appreciate this as art, then it is art.

In your country what is the most famous work of art?

A difficult question to answer. As a Canadian and with my background in engineering, I would look at buildings such as the CN Tower (tallest building in the world). My son views natural beauty as artwork and suggested the "Canadian Shield" or even Niagara Falls. There is also the unique artwork created by the natives of this country, i.e. the Inuit (Eskimo) soap stone carvings. Neither my son or I could define one piece of Canadian art as being famous. Despite this, I am sure that upon reflection with others, such a description could be found with someone here in Canada.

Best of luck with your ThinkQuest project.
