ENERGY IN SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa is developing country. While Cape Town was one of the first cities in the world to get electric street lighting, more than half of South Africa's population still do not have access to electricity and have to rely on energy sources such as; paraffin, coal, wood, cow dung and candles.  Without doubt all South African would benefit from having access to electricity.

Is this goal achievable? The problem is that many remote parts of South Africa are far away from the National Grid and make grid electricity supply a unaffordable option.  What other supply options exist ? Is solar electicity a suitable option ? Could we use the wind to generate electricity ? This website provides some insight into some of the energy issues and options facing South Africa as we move into the 3rd millenium.
