Hydro-Electricity

HYDRO ELECTRIC POWER

The above picture shows a hydroelectric dam producing electricity. Water is stored in the lake behind the dam and is passed through turbines at the part of the dam.

Giant generators drive the turbines which produce energy. Energy is sent to run electrical appliances in your home and machinery in the factories.

Hydroelectrc power is generated by turbines that are driven by falling water.A lake is formed by building a dam across a river.

Water is allowed by gates in the dam wall to fall to the level of the river below, flowing past turbine inside the wall as it does so.

Electrical energy from the dam undergoes many changes bofore it goes into your light bulbs. Energy from the sun evaporates ocean water. The heat energy is transformed to potential energy whe the liquid water evaporates. When it rains the water vapour becomes liquid and the potential energy turns into kinetic energy. The water flows onto the dam from the lake and the kinetic energy becomes potential energy.
