Skylight

-- an empty courtyard in the middle of a quadrangular or triangular house or wall. Its form looks like a well and opens to the air, thus getting its name.

The ancient city of Lijiang is the only famous cultural city without a wall in Chinese history. It preserves large area of residential architecture of the Ming and Qing Dynasty, which was tiled stairway houses with earth and wooden structure, mostly having three walls and a screen wall facing the gate of a house, some quadrangles highlighting the construction art of the minor nationalities. The folk residential architecture has plain and vivid form, elaborate and elegant decorations. Quadrangles with five skylights are commonly seen forms. They are closed quadrangles made up of principal rooms, lower rooms, right and left wing-rooms. Besides a big one in the middle, there are four small skylights or leaking wells at the four corners.
