Longjing
Spring, originally named Longhong, also called Longqiu, was famous from
the time of the Three Kingdoms. In the Jing Dynasty, Gehong made pills
of immortality as a Taoist practice here. It is located on the Phoenix
Mountain Peak to the west of the West Lake and it is said to be
discovered during the Chiwu years of the Eastern Wu Dynasty (238-251).
The spring water comes out of the mountain rocks without stopping all
the four seasons and tastes sweet and cool. It is a highest
entertainment from the ancient times "to drink a cup of the
mountain water".
Longjing is a circular spring pool and
it is never waterless during the drought. Ancient people thought that it
was connected with the sea and had dragon in it, thus it was called
Longjing or Dragon Well. The peculiar characteristics of Longjin water
is that there appears a dividing line when it is stirred, it keeps
moving like gossamer and disappears gradually. The water of Longjing
Spring consists of two parts, underground and on the ground. The
underground water has denser gravity, so it is underneath and the
water on the ground is over it. When it is stirred, the underground
water will come to the surface and forms a dividing line. When it goes
down again, the dividing line becomes shorter gradually and disappears
at the end.
Besides a famous spring, Longjing is also the
producing area of the famous Longjing Green Tea in China.
