Areas and Volumes of Prisms

Objective:

            • Understanding the parts of prisms, finding areas and volumes of prisms

Lesson 12-1 Prisms:

            Prism: A solid whose bass or ends are any congruent and parallel polygons, and whose sides are parallelograms

          Bases: The congruent polygons of the prism

          Altitude: A segment joining the two base planes and perpendicular to both. The length of an altitude is also the height, h, of the prism.

          Lateral edges: The adjacent lateral faces intersect in parallel segment.

          Lateral faces: The faces of a prism that are not its bases. The faces are also parallelograms

           Right Prism: Prisms that has the lateral faces that are rectangles. The lateral faces and the base form a 90º angle.

          Oblique Prism: Prisms that has lateral faces that are parallelogram.

Oblique Prism               Right prism

            Lateral area: Sum of the areas of its lateral faces.

            Total area: Sum of the areas of all its faces

Theorem 12-1

The lateral area of a right prism equals the perimeter of a base times the height of the prism. (L.A. = ph)

Perimeter of a base=15

Height= 10

LA= (15)(10)= 150

Theorem 12-2

The Volume of a right prism equals the area of a base times the height of the prism. (V=Bh)

Area of a base= 7.5

Height= 10

V= (7.5)(10)= 75
