Linear Transformation
Momentum is a vector quantity which is mathematically
defined as p = mv. m is mass and v is the velocity. When momentum is applied on the pool table,
it is a linear transformation because the balls only move in one unique direction defined by the
momentum of the cue in a straight line. Although in this section we are chiefly concerned with
linear dynamics, we will cover non-linear dynamics later in the spinning section.
In terms of forces and assuming constant mass, linear momentum is the rate of change of the force:
F = m dv/dt = dp/dt
Sample Problem
If a football player (mass of 100kg) is accelerating according to the equation F1
=3t2+3t and a computer nerd (mass of 50kg) is accelerating according to the equation
F2=4t3-t. They both begun to accelerate at time t=0.
If they continuously accelerate (infinite source of coke), how long will it take for the computer nerd to become
more ominous?
