Saint-Just had a speech to deliver. He came to the Committee of Public Safety at eight yesterday evening. He refused to tell us the content of his speech, saying it was not finished and he wanted to make some changes. People were afraid this meant fresh attack. It was decided not to let him speak and make sure he could not be heard.

This morning, 9 Thermidor, when the session the Convention began, Saint-just appeared at the rostrum. The members of the Committee declared that he ought not to be listened to, that he had not shown them his speech. Robespierre demanded that he be heard. People upbraided Robespierre; he replied; it degenerated into an altercation.
