Even though the Waste Collection System is used like a standard toilet, it is more complex and has more jobs. It consists of a commode, urinal, odor and bacteria filter, fan separators, vacuum vent quick disconnect and waste collection system controls.
The commode has one multi-layered bag liner which stores and collects solid wastes. When the commode is in use, the fan separator provides the air circulation. When the commode is not in use, it is depressurized, which allows the waste to be dried.

The urinal is a funnel, which can be accommodated for both male and female, that attaches to a hose. The hose transports the urine to the waste water tank.

The fan separator provides air circulation for the liquid wastes, then separates the air and the liquid as the liquid goes to the waste water tank and the air goes through the odor and bacteria filter and into the crew cabin. The vacuum quick disconnect is used to vent liquid directly away from the equipment and is connected to the quick disconnect through the vacuum line.
The astronauts need restraints and adjustments to release their wastes in a zero gravity environment. The waste collection system provides those needs. For example, there is a toe bar located at the bottom of the commode, which is used to urinate standing. The crew member slips his foot under the toe bar restraint, and it can be adjusted by releasing two locking levers.
For a crew member that sits on the commode, there is a foot restraint. It is on an adjustable platform with velcro straps to lock onto the feet. Two locking handles pulled forward can adjust it. Two other levels can change the height of the footrest.
The most important restraint on the commode is the thigh bar. It puts approximately ten pounds on each thigh. The thigh bars can be put into position by lifting and rotating them over the thighs and then releasing. The back-up method is simply velcro straps that attach in the front.
The last restraints on the waste collection system are the handholds. These are used for stabilizing and positioning while on the commode.

Gives a whole new meaning to "potty training" doesn't it?
