Supersonic Ground Travel

717.144 mph, Andy Green of the British Royal Air Force set the world land speed record. Although Green is the official record holder, Stan Barrett, former Hollywood stuntman holds the unofficial record breaking the sound barrier. Green drove a jet-powered car and Barrett drove a hybrid liquid and solid-fuel rocket engine car. On December

17, 1979 Barrett made history being the first person to break the sound barrier on ground. Bolting across Rogers Dry Lake Barrett achieved speeds of 739.666 mph he had reached Mach 1.0102.
Green did not have his official record for long, a fellow Royal Air Force pilot Noble came back just three weeks after Green set the record and toped it by nearly 49 mph. On October 16, 1997, 766.609 mph provisionally set the new world ground speed record at Mach 1.02.
