Scotch Tape > Sticker > ?The story began in 1902, when five businessmen founded the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M). Their idea was to mine an abrasive material called corundum and sell it to grinding-wheel and sandpaper manufacturers. Today, the company is the world leader in glues, self-adhesive materials, etc. Only in eight months of 2000, 3M was granted more than 300 patents. Sometimes, chance does favor the prepared mind of the company personnel. While singing for the church choir, an employee of 3M was having difficulties keeping his music book open to the right page; the bookmark would constantly fly out from the needed pages. One day, an idea came to the mind of this employee: "what if we make the bookmarks self-adhesive?" From this point, the successful life began of a product we know today as "sticker". The story of 3M does not end here. The company continues diversification of its product line. Below is an example: US patent 6022914 "Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Composition and Tapes". Pressure-sensitive adhesive compositions find use in a wide variety of applications, such as the automotive, aerospace, construction and electrical markets, either in the form of tapes or as adhesive coatings on other backings. For many of these applications, good flame retardant properties are of considerable importance. More curious people are advised to visit the patent page marked above. |
