Although it may seem as if computers are a development of the 80’s, they had been around for decades. The first computer was actually built in 1946 by a team of scientists led by John Mauchly and John Eckert. This first computer was called ENIAC, the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer. Although ENIAC’s tiny memory and unreliability made it very difficult to use, it was a start. It could add two numbers in 0.2 milliseconds letting mathematicians perform calculations in one day that would have otherwise taken a year. After the transistor was invented in 1947, devices such as keyboards made it easier to input data, and computer memory was greatly expanded the information age had truly began.
