Rising Sun: A Cultural Portrait of Japan

Heisei (1989-2000)

Japan no longer has much military power but makes up for it by being a world economic superpower. It can again compete with the likes of the US and major European countries after making a sensational comeback after the second world war. The major problems encountered by present day Japanese are stock market fluctuations and how to integrate modernization with tradition. In Japan, it is not odd to see ancient temples and state-of-art cutting edge new buildings adjacent to each other.

Emperor Hirohito was succeeded by his son, Akihito. Winter Olympics are held in and around Nagano.

There were a few terrible incidents that got some international attention though. An earthquake near the city of Kobe resulted in over 4000 dead. Twelve died and 5500 injured when a Tokyo subway system filled with poisonous nerve gas, supposedly performed by a small religious cult. There was also an accident involving radiation that caused two people to die.

There is more to say but what is happening at present is really covered throughout the site. Enjoy reading!

Future

Japan has had a tumultuous history- surviving through a long period of feudalism, a long period of isolation, plus earthquakes, Olympics, shoguns, several wars and much civil unrest until it again finally rests on top of the world. Some things were blessings in disguise such as the Kanto earthquake which led to a new and more beautiful Yomahama district. Throughout this process Japan has modernized while still clinging to its own culture. We predict a long and even more prosperous future for this country.
